Moths 2018

Friday 19th October

It was a lot more quieter this morning, but not surprising considering the drop in temperature. Total's today included 45 moths including 10 species and are as follows, 2 Merveille du Jour, 1 Large Wainscot, 1 Feathered Thorn, 10 Red and Green Carpet, 2 Common Marbled Carpet, 9 Feathered Gothics, 10 Lunar Underwing, 2 Red line Quakers, 3 Large Yellow Underwing and 5 Black  Rustics. 

Thursday 18th October

Well the moth total was exactly the same as the previous night with a total of 79 but involved 13 species. Total's were, 2 Merveille du Jour, 1 Large Wainscot, 3 Feathered Thorns, 3 Red and Green Carpet, 8 Common Marbled Carpet, 22 Feathered Gothics, 20 Lunar Underwing, 2 Red line Quakers, 6 Dusky Sallow, 3 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Sallow, 7 Black  Rustics and 1 Centre-barred Sallow. 


Wednesday 17th October



Top Picture Merveille du Jour moth Bottom Picture Feathered Thorn
There was an overnight total of 79 moths which included 14 species, and there was certainly some quality moths caught. Best of all was a stunning Merveille du Jour in cracking fresh plumage, and a total of 4 Feathered Thorns. Others seen was 3 Red and Green Carpet, 4 Common Marbled Carpet, 21 Feathered Gothics, 26 Lunar Underwing, 3 Broad bordered Yellow Underwing,  8 Common Rustic, 2 Dusky Sallow, 3 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Burnished Brass, 1 Sallow, 1 Hart and Dart and 1 Centre-barred Sallow. 

Thursday 11th October

A total of 70 moths were noted including 8 species, total's are as follows: 33 Feathered Gothics, 25 Lunar Underwing, 3 Broad bordered Yellow Underwing,  2 Common Rustic, 1 Dusky Sallow, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Burnished Brass and 3 Centre-barred Sallow. 

Wednesday 10th October

A good night for the moth trap with a total of 146 moths including 8 species. Total's are  as follows: 82 Feathered Gothics, 36 Lunar Underwing, 2 Broad bordered Yellow Underwing,  8 Common Rustic, 2 Dusky Sallow, 12 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Burnished Brass and 3 Centre-barred Sallow. 

Friday 28th September


Clifden Nonpareil
Wow, that was a Fantastic night of moth recording with a total of 409 moths including 17 species, and without doubt the star of the show was this superb Clifden Nonpareil a Rare find still for Kent and an Excellent site record. Other total's are as follows: 265 Feathered Gothics, 1 Large Thorn, 45 Lunar Underwing, 1 Hart and Dart, 1 Red Underwing, 1 Common Wainscot, 2 Broad - boardered Yellow Underwing, 2 Ruby Tiger, 22 Common Rustic, 2 Dusky Sallow, 55 Large Yellow Underwing, 2 The  Flame, 2 Burnished Brass, 2 White Point, 3 Centre-barred Sallow and 2 Bloodvein.  

Tuesday 18th September

The overnight conditions of blustery winds certainly didn't help this mornings total of just 54 moths, in this was 12 species which included, 4 Bright-line Brown-eye, 6 The Flame, 4 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 9 Large Yellow Underwings, 6 Common Rustics, 1 Poplar Grey, 1 Red Underwing, 3 Magpie Moth, 3 Broad-boarded Yellow Underwing, 3 Large Thorn, 4 Hart and Club and 10 Feathered Gothics.

Friday 14th September

It was another quiet night in the trap with a total of just 70 including just 10 species. Total's are as follows: 1 Light Emerald, 2 Bright-line Brown-eye, 2 The Flame, 8 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 43 Large Yellow Underwings, 2 Common Rustics, 1 Poplar Grey, 1 Red Underwing, 3 Magpie Moth and 7 Feathered Gothics.

Thursday 13th September

A poor night in the moth trap with just 57 in total including just 9 species, and are as follows: 2 Light Emerald, 2 Bright-line Brown-eye, 2 The Flame, 4 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 40 Large Yellow Underwings, 4 Common Rustics, 1 Poplar Grey, 1 Red Underwings and 3 Feathered Gothics.

Wednesday 12th September


Frosted Orange 
Last night's overnight catch included 113 moths which involved 16 Species, and are as follows: 6 Light Emerald, 6 Bright-line Brown-eye, 7 The Flame, 16 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 29 Large Yellow Underwings, 7 Common Rustics, 3 Poplar Grey, 2 Red Underwings, 12 Feathered Gothics, 1 Frosted Orange, 5 Hart and Dart, 7 Hart and Club, 2 Burnished Brass, 8 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 1 White Point and 1 Bloodvein.

Tuesday 11th September

An overnight catch produced 70 moths and included 11 species. Total's are as follows: 2 Light Emerald, 4 Bright-line Brown-eye, 3 The Flame, 17 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 6 Large Yellow Underwings, 10 Common Rustics, 3 Poplar Grey, 2 Red Underwings, 13 Feathered Gothics, 3 Common Wainscot and 7 Hart and Dart.

Tuesday 4th September

An overnight catch in a slightly different area was certainly productive, with a count of 121 moths which included 25 species. Total's are as follows: 5 Light Emerald, 2 Bright-line Brown-eye, 1 Magpie Moth, 5 The Flame, 30 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 20 Large Yellow Underwings, 12 Common Rustics, 3 Poplar Grey, 2 Red Underwings, 7 Feathered Gothics, 1 Dun Bar, 2 Swallowtail, 3 Common Wainscot, 3 Hart and Dart, 3 Hart and Club, 3 Burnished Brass, 1 Bloodvein, 2 Ruby Tiger, 3 Silver Y, 1 Dusky Sallow, 2 White Point, 2 Square Spot Rustic, 22 Centre-barred Sallow and 4 Smoky Wainscot.

Friday 31st August

A poor overnight catch with just 59 moths and 9 species which included 17 Large Yellow Underwings, 9 Lesser Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, 5 Common Footman, 1 Snout, 7 Common Rustics, 2 Dan Bar, 5 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 6 The Flame and 7 Small Magpie.

Thursday 23rd August

Although it was nearly half of the moths caught from the previous night a total of 127  was still pretty good and did include 15 species, best of all was a stunning Garden Tiger which was seen early evening only. Others noted were 3 Buff Ermine, 2 Brimstone, 5 Light Emerald, 1 Blood vein, 2 Burnished Brass, 30 Lesser Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, 9 Light Arches, 2 Dark Arches, 41 Common Rustics, 10 Hart and Darts, 15 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Common Footman, 1 Small Magpie and 3 Large Yellow Underwings.

A Fantastic night of moth trapping in the woodland area, with a total of 224 Moths including 31 species.Total's are as follows: 5 Buff Ermine, 4 Brimstone, 3 Light Emerald, 3 Blood vein, 3 Burnished Brass, 21 Lesser Broad Boardered Yellow Underwing, 5 Light Arches, 6 Dark Arches, 1 Poplar Hawk Moth, 36 Common Rustics, 13 Hart and Darts, 53 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 4 Common Footman, 4 Dun Bar, 3 Rosy Minor, 4 Mottled Beauty, 11 Large Yellow Underwing, 7 Bright-line Brown eye, 6 Mother of Pearl, 6 The Flame, 4 Flame Shoulder, 1  Smoky Wainscot, 4 Small Magpie, 3 Angle shades, 1 Snout, 4 Dark Spectacle, 2 Hart and Club, 2 Swallowtail, 1 Black Arches, 1 Black Rustic and 3 Ruby Tiger.
Thursday 2nd August

It was a fairly disappointing overnight catch of just 38 moths, but surprisingly it involved a total of 20 species and included, 1 Small Elephant Hawk Moth, 2 Burnished Brass, 1 Grey Dagger, 2 Hart and Dart, 5 Common Rustic, 2 Common Wainscot, 2 Buff Ermine, 3 Dark Arches, 2 Buff Tip, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Flame Shoulder, 2 The Flame1 Black Rustic1 Black Arches, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Character2 Dot Moth, 1 Drinker, 1 Small Magpie, 1 Ruby Tigerand 1 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing

Pine Hawk Moth Left and Privet Hawk Moth Right (Woodland Area)
An Excellent overnight catch which a total of 173 moths including 27 species. Total's were 4 Small Elephant Hawk Moths, 1 Pine Hawk Moth, 2 Poplar Hawk Moth, 1 Privet Hawk Moth, 4 Large Elephant Hawk Moth, 6 Burnished Brass, 3 Grey Dagger, 10 Hart and Dart, 28 Common Rustic, 5 Common Wainscot, 8 Buff Ermine, 16 Dark Arches, 6 Buff Tip, 18 Large Yellow Underwing, 9 Flame Shoulder, 6 The Flame, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Black Arches, 15 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Dot Moth, 2 Drinker, 5 Small Magpie, 7 Brown-line Bright eye, 5 White Point, 3 L-album Wainscot, 4 Brimstone and 1 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing. 

Thursday 5th July



Elephant Hawk Moths (Woodland Area)
A very good overnight of trapping with a total of 113 moths which included 18 different species. Total's are as follows: 5 Small Elephant Hawk Moths, 1 Large Elephant Hawk Moth, 20 Large Yellow Underwing, 10 Garden Carpet, 2 Yellow Shell, 8 Buff Ermine, 4 White Ermine, 1 Black Rustic, 5 Hart and Dart, 3 Hart and Club, 4 Common Footman, 8 The Flame, 6 Flame Shoulder, 2 Small Yellow Underwing, 16 Common Rustic, 13 Dark Arches, 3 Light Arches and 2 Swallowtail. 

Thursday 28th June

A quiet night of trapping with just 32 Moths including 9 different species seen, these included 2 Large Yellow Underwings, 1 Peppered Moth, 3 Common Footman, 5 Hart and Dart, 7 Buff Ermine, 5 White Ermine, 4 Common Wainscot, 3 Dark Arches and 2 The Flame. 

Thursday 21st June


Eyed Hawk Moth (Walled Garden)
A quiet night with 40 moths caught in total including 12 different species. Best of all was an Eyed Hawk and Drinker moth, with the others being 6 Buff Ermines, 4 Hart and Dart, 9 White Ermine, 3 Garden Carpets, 4 Common Wainscot, 4 Common Footman, 3 Small Magpies, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Dark Arches, and 2 Common Rustics.

Thursday 14th June

A fairly good overnight of trapping with 81 Moths including 15 different species seen, these included 8 Large Yellow Underwings, 3 Peppered Moth, 6 Common Footman, 7 Hart and Dart, 1 Red Underwing, 11 Buff Ermine, 9 White Ermine, 4 Common Wainscots 3 Silver Y, 6 Common Rustics, 4 Flame, 6 Flame Shoulder, 4 Garden Carpet, 8 Burnished Brass and 1 Yellow Shell.
